The Belmont Planning Department is committed to maintaining Belmont's character as a small town within a bustling metropolitan region. The only city in the Charlotte metropolitan region located entirely on a peninsula, Belmont possesses unique environmental, historical and economic assets. The first existing municipality in the United States to adopt and implement a New Urbanist Zoning Ordinance in 1995, Belmont positioned itself on the leading edge of smart growth planning. By embracing development and design principles which create walkable, sustainable and visually aesthetic communities interconnected by streets, greenways and pedestrian pathways, the Belmont Planning Department recognizes it's role in maintaining and enhancing quality of life for the entire community.
