Reid Park Community Garden

A community garden is being built near the playground at Reid Park on Sacco Street. The garden will consist of 12 raised beds that are 8' long x 4' wide and 12" tall. It will provide fresh fruits and vegetables for the Reid Community.

These beds will contain organic soil and fertilizer and will soon receive seedlings for a fall planting from the Holy Angels garden.

Members of the Reid Community, First Presbyterian Church's Boy Scout Troop 62, and other community volunteers built the beds on Saturday, October 31st. Reid Community residents also planted the garden and J and G Fence Company completed the fence around the garden on December 4th. The garden is being funded through an Eat Smart, Move More NC grant that the Gaston County Health Department received from the NC Division of Public Health. The grant includes Eat Smart, Move More classes at Mount Moriah Baptist Church for community members that will be taught by NC Cooperative Extension staff. It will also incorporate signage for 1, 2, and 3 mile walking routs around downtown Belmont.

This project is a collaborative effort between the Reid Community, City of Belmont, Gaston County Health Department, Belmont Parish Nurse Ministry, NC Cooperative Extension, Belmont Neighborhood Partners, and Holy Angels.
