Belmont Overlay District to UDO

Minimize

The Belmont City Council and the Gaston County Board of Commissioners has been working for several months on a plan to allow greater land use protections for residents living on the South Point peninsula who may be impacted by the proposed Garden Parkway. This plan would create a new Belmont Overlay District in the Gaston County Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), which would provide greater zoning protections for people and businesses outside of the Belmont city limits. A copy of the proposed text of the Belmont Overlay District is available by clicking on the page to the right. The Belmont Overlay District language begins on page 61.

It would also provide greater representation to people living in the Belmont extra-territorial jurisdiction (ETJ), as the City of Belmont would remove the ETJ designation from the South Point peninsula. No longer would residents living outside of the Belmont city limits fall under the zoning control of the City of Belmont. The goal of this work is to allow new residential, commercial, and mixed-use development that will occur outside of the Belmont city limits to reflect the small town character of Belmont. Please refer to the map on the left for areas that would fall under the proposed Belmont Overlay district.
